Unitarian Fellowship of Longview November Programs November 5th Entering The Gateless Gate: A look at Zen koan practice Durren Anderson Buddhism has a long history of creating "skillful means" or Upaya, for opening individuals up to their true natures. Among the most dynamic is the Zen koan. The koan is a pedagogic device developed by the patriarchs of Zen during China's Sung Dynasty (960-1279). Unlike the highly discursive instruction preferred by western spiritual teachers, the koan is designed to thwart all conceptualizations, obliging the practitioner to arrive at the deepest realization through the power of his insight and intuition alone.
