Called to Hope

Mary Andrews

(from a sermon by Rev. Kim K. Crawford Harvie

Arlington Street Church, Boston)

"All will come again into its strength...the fields undivided, the waters undammed, the trees towering and the walls built low. And in the valleys, people as strong and varied as the land." [Rainer Maria Rilke, Book of Hours] We need one another in all our diversity...this is the foundation of spiritual community. We gather, as the Chanukah greeting goes, to nourish hope where reason fails.

World Religions Forum

One of the most successful programs at our Fellowship was held Sunday, January 8th. Because we publicized it in the community, it sparked wide interest and was covered by the Longview News-Journal. In addition, we were able to welcome many visitors from other congregations who were also eager to hear the discussion.

The panel included representatives from the Wiccan, Buddhist, Islam, Christian, Hindu and Jewish faiths. By the end of the discussion, we realized that all world religions teach their adherents to care for their fellow human beings and to live in

peace. continued on Page 3 ... see Forum

Mitten Tree

Sheila McElroy

The 19th of December I picked the UFL Christmas Tree clean of all the caps, gloves, mittens and scarves. The box was overflowing. I drove to the Longview Women's Center and rang the bell. I was admitted with the announcement, "The mitten lady is here."

I was ushered into a large room where toys and other goods were already being gathered to wrap for the Christmas party the next day. The UFL provided 29 sets of caps, gloves, mittens and scarves to keep children warm.

Thank you for the donations to the Mitten Tree and for making it a success.
