The Loyal Opposition

Mary Andrews

Rev. Scott Gerard Prinster wrote: "I think of patriotism not as unquestioning zealotry, but as the sort of love we have for family members – they are exasperating sometimes, but we are loyal nonetheless ... that allows us to look deeply enough to see their flaws, yet remain in relationship with them, flaws and all. May your Fourth of July be a time of thoughtful patriotism – a love that expects our nation to do better, and moves each of us to work to sustain and share our ideals."

Volunteers with or without children are needed to host international teens from over 40 countries for the 2005/2006 fall semester or academic year. They are in need of caring persons to provide a home and share with them this unique experience. The host family or parent will provide a bed, meals, as well as friendship, understanding, and a genuine desire to share the American way of life with a youngster from overseas. The students speak English, are covered by medical insurance, have spending money for their personal expenses, and hope to arrive in August for enrollment in their new high school.

All students are between the ages of 15 and 18, and will attend the high school closest to their host family's home. Those interested are able to review student applications and select the student they feel will best match their family. For more information, please call Yvette Coffman at 1-800-941-3738 www.sharesouthwest.org

Leave My Child Alone!

Hidden in the No Child Left Behind Act is a provision that requires schools to hand over student contact information to military recruiters or face losing their federal aid. Parents who don't want their kids pursued by the Pentagon can opt out, but most aren't told how. Our new campaign, Leave My Child Alone, is mobilizing volunteers across the country to get kids off the lists that schools provide to local military recruiters. You can help! To protect high school students from this invasion of privacy, go to LeaveMyChildAlone.org where you can take your child off the list, sign a petition or learn how to lobby your local school board

A Note From Nell

6-1-05

Veronica,

Just a note to say how much I appreciate your thoughtfulness in calling.

I spent Sunday going, visiting and coming back from Lake Cherokee with nephew and family. It's your turn this next week to visit graduating grandchildren if I remember correctly.

There was a reception for our new Democratic Party Chairperson - Brendon Roth - yesterday but I couldn't make it. By 5 p.m. I was about "a quart low" of energy! It was Meals on Wheels volunteer day as well. .

Photo included. (I'm Annette in a black wig!) was on the day of the Mardi Gras Parade in Jefferson. 3 of us are on the board of Opera House Theatre Players and rode on the OHTP float - throwing beads to the spectators.

Hope your remaining spring days are enjoyable. Give my regards to UUers.

Love, Nell
