Just Get Over It!!

Deavrah Turner

Longview realtor Deavrah Turner will talk about doing business as an African-American female in the East Texas area today. Her topic relates directly to the most common response to complaints regarding how business has always been done, and continues today, although on a lower key. To bring the old ways into a new millennium would suit many in this area just fine. Deavrah will explain in detail.

Creating Healthy Communities

Suzanne Schmidt, PhD

It only takes a short trip on a crowded roadway to understand that human beings are interconnected and influence one another's health and safety. However, we seldom stop to ask what kind of world we would like to inhabit and whether we are acting in a way that helps create that kind of environment. Join Dr. Schmidt as she explores what healthy communities look like and how to participate in their creation.

A Look Back At 2005

Huey Mitchell

As the year draws to a close, I reflect back on what this year has meant for the Unitarian Fellowship of Longview. It has been a year of transition. With the generosity and hard work of all our members and friends, we were able to start the year by purchasing, for the very first time, our own building. Yes, January 21, 2005, Frank signed the papers that made it all official.

With keys in hand we commenced to make the building ours. The decoration committee, led by Ellen, painted, hung wall hangings and even drove off negative spirits that were hanging around.

February 13th we had our last service at Gilmer Road. Helen presented us with a farewell love story "AVery Personal Valentine." Being one of the founding members it seemed fitting that she close out this phase of our evolution.

February 20th, for our first service in our new home, we drew on the talents of our newest member, David White. David’s presentation was " Religious Revivalism" and gave us insight into what history can teach us. Yes, we were off to a great start for 2005, and we have never slowed down.

Our official building dedication service was held on May 1st. The service included Robert Hill, SWUUA District Executive, who came from Dallas to speak to and celebrate with us. Afterwards we held a tree planting ceremony with everyone participating. Frank made a particularly memorable speech about the significance of planting a tree at our new site.
