INTEGRAL EXPLORERS Linda Smith At the last Overview to Integral Thinking meeting, June 28, we looked at Dr. Don Beck's informative Spiral Dynamics model that charts the evolution of human culture and consciousness. "The concept of Spiral Dynamics is that human nature is not fixed; we're not set at birth. Rather, we have the capacities, in the nature of the mind/brain itself, to construct new conceptual worlds. SD is trying to describe how humans are able, when things get bad enough, to adapt to their situation by creating greater complexities of thinking to handle new problems." With Beck's charts, it's easy to get the main ideas and begin using this way of thinking. Sky provided an apt example from her own experience this past week in which she was able to defuse a negative, emotional response of hers by seeing from the perspectives that Spiral Dynamics gives. And Dick revisited past business experiences and saw them with greater clarity because of the Quadrant model of Ken Wilber, also discussed during our June sessions. Because of expressed interest in exploring more fully these expanded ways of thinking, we will have bi-monthly meetings starting in September: the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. We will use Ken Wilber's A Theory of Everything: An Integral Vision for Business, Politics, Science, and Spirituality. I look forward to our discussions and the creative ideas that arise from them. If this sounds interesting to you, contact Sky: skysong@etex.net or Linda: 903-757-4198 for more information. Einstein: "The problems that exist in the world today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking that created them." Women's Drumming Group Peggy Nader and Sheila McElroy would like to start a women's drumming group. We know there are several women in the UFL who drum or have friends who do, so lets get the beat started. Call Peggy 903-759-6467 or Sheila McElroy 903-236-0073 and we'll get it organized

East Texas PFLAG - Longview Affiliate Longview PFLAG met for the very first time on April 26, 2005, with 25 people in attendance. During this meeting it was decided that we would become an affiliate of East Texas PFLAG. We received information and support from the people in Tyler who established East Texas PFLAG. This affiliate will be meeting at the UFL on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Future plans include marching in the pride parade in September, forming a letter-writing committee to oppose the gay marriage ban set to be voted on in November, and distributing bumper stickers that say: marriage = heart + heart (designed and produced by Durren and Jonna) We are also planning on organizing a series of speakers to begin , we hope, in September, to discuss various issues related to PFLAG, beginning with a mom of a gay daughter. On July 11th a vote was taken at the Tyler affiliate meeting as to whether we would pay our own $75 fee to enter the parade or to accept Dallas PFLAG's offer to march with them. A vote was taken and the group decided to pay our own $75 fee, but wants to march next to the Dallas PFLAG contingent. That will be on September 18 in Dallas at the 2005 Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. East Texas PFLAG now has 32 members: Tyler -- 13 and Longview -- 19.
