JULY PROGRAMS July 4 Patriot Act Jim Gray Jim’s presentation will emphasize the threat to constitutional rights and civil liberties and discuss the mechanics of this act. Jim’s professional career includes: County Commissioner of Gregg County, Administrative Chief Deputy of Gregg County, and Executive Director of East Texas Treatment Center. July 11 Band Aids for a Wounded World Kathy Lansford At a time when every news broadcast and headline bring reason for despair, it helps to reflect on examples of action, both large and small, that promote healing and community. July 18 Ideology and Struggles of Young People in the Bible Belt Anna Beck, Michael Herbert Bryan Parker, Laura White Four liberal youths, ranging in age from 19-21 years who call Longview home, will discuss growing up and interacting with other youth in the Bible Belt, their ideologies, and their religious journey.
July 25 A Tale of Two Brothers: Looking at James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues" Richard Parrish James Baldwin's short story, "Sonny's Blues," depicts the unsettling relationship of two brothers in quiet conflict. We'll take a look at the relationship that the two brothers share, focusing on how often unstated but long-held perceptions contribute to familial stress. We'll also explore the path that Sonny and his brother take--and that we can choose, too--toward mutual respect and even admiration among family members with disparate lifestyles and belief systems. (UFL members and friends are encouraged, if they wish, to read Baldwin's wonderful story before the presentation.)

. GOOD, BAD and THE DIFFERENCE After Barbara’s talk on ethics in March, several people asked that the ethics framework she based her talk in part on be printed so they could review those ideas and examine their lives in light of them. See ETHICS page 2. Additions/Corrections/Deletions The UFL Directory is in the process of being updated. If you are not a member of UFL, but would like to be considered a "Friend of UFL," please contact Betty Golding at bmwgolding@cablelynx.com. If you give her your name, address, phone number and e-mail address, she will see that you are included in the updated Directory. Also, please let her know about any corrections or updates that need to be made. Are you in a stew?
Do you smoke pot? See STEW POT page 3. Kitchen Duty It has been both an artistic and culinary experience to walk into Longview’s Unitarian Fellowship Hall on Gilmer Road these Sunday mornings in June. The Herbert Family has not only tended to our taste buds and fed us well, they have strummed the strings of our soulful hearts with the beautiful hand-woven tablecloths they commissioned to be made for them by a family of weavers in Mexico. Since the stomach is an equally important organ, they have prepared nourishing and delicious brunches for us to enjoy on our 7½-minute Unitarian Breaks and fortify ourselves with delicious food so we can vigorously Talk Back. Thank you Michael, Ellen and Frank! In July we will be catered to by Jessica Noble, Helen Ausman and Peggy Nader. |
