| Putting Things Into Perspective Becky L. Walker If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following. There would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south, 8 Africans, 52 would be female, 48 would be male, 70 would be non-white, 30 would be white, 70 would be non-Christian, 30 would be Christian, 89 would be heterosexual, 11 would be homosexual, 6 people would possess 58% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the U.S. 80 would live in substandard housing, 70 would be unable to read, 50 would suffer from malnutrition, 1 would be near death, 1 would be near birth, 1 would have a college education, 1 would own a computer. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. When one considers our world in such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding, generosity and education become glaringly apparent. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yuletide Cheer
YOU'RE INVITED! This year we will congregate at the Mitchell's on Saturday, December 18th, starting at 7:00 pm for music, merriment, and munchies to celebrate the Solstice - Christmas - New Year holiday season. The evening will include a White Elephant Gift Exchange.
|
Each person is requested to bring a "gift."
Specifically, something you own but would like to get rid of. These
"gifts" are from anonymous donors, so do not put your name (or anyone
else's) on them. This is the perfect time to get rid of some tacky gift
you were given at some other party. Do wrap it up to look like it's
something wonderful. We will be providing our own entertainment. Therefore, we are requesting that each of our guests bring something in the way of music or entertainment to share. POT LUCK and BYOB<--Directions To The Mitchell's--> From Longview: Take 259 north to Diana. Turn left onto SH-154 at the traffic signal. (New Diana High School will be on your right and a gas station on your left.) Go 3 miles to FM 726. Turn right onto 726 and go about 2000 feet to the second mailbox (1715). The mailbox will be on your right. Our driveway is directly across from it on your left. It's a steep climb, but you can do it! ><><><><><>><><>><>><>>><><><>><><>< Candlelight Vigil Several members and friends of the Unitarian Fellowship
of Longview held a candlelight vigil on November 1st. They were joining in
a nationwide effort to illuminate the issues that unite us: health,
education, jobs, social justice, religious freedom, peace, and a
sustainable environment. They were joined by other concerned citizens.
November 1st was chosen as the day to demonstrate in an effort to bring
these issues to the front of voters' minds as they were preparing to vote.
