AUGUST PROGRAMS August 1 Buddhism in East Texas Jonna & Durren Anderson, Sky Mitchell, David & Sarah White This panel of Buddhists will discuss what Buddhism is, why they are Buddhists, what Buddhist practices they engage in, and what it is like to be a Buddhist in the Bible Belt. Come prepared with your own questions about Buddhism and their experiences. We'll grapple with it all!
August 8 Wisdom From the Road Crew Frank Herbert My first job after college and marriage was on a road construction crew for the Lincoln Parish Highway Department of North Central Louisiana. For a year I accumulated stories and wisdom from crew hands, truck drivers, equipment operators, mechanics and bosses who were all too eager to give a proper education to the newlywed college boy.
August 15 Lovecraft's Labors Philip Scott "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear. And the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." We will probe the mysteries of the Cthulhu Mythos and the dreaded necronomicon as we consider H. P. Lovecraft and his impact on readers of classic horror. Philip will present this feast of weirdness for your consideration and consumption. Bring your appetites ... there is much to be devoured.
August 22 Censonship Barbara Cavin
August 29 Modern Roads to Ancient Wisdom Lynn Bauman Modern men and women live in a technological society devoid of the sources of wisdom. In order to flourish in this wasteland, we need to reconnect with our own ancient wisdom sources. |
Young
Adults Draw Capacity Crowd There was fresh energy in the air on Sunday, July 18th when Anna Beck, Michael Herbert, Bryan Parker and Laura White came to our Fellowship to describe their particular upbringings and experiences that influenced them and how they began thinking for themselves. They talked about what they are doing
now, their plans for the future and their views on today's world. We older adults were entranced by this rare gift of insight into the thoughts and feelings of young people and are inspired with hope for the future after listening to and dialoguing with them. Curious about what they had to say? See: UFL Super Sunday page 2 Longview Community Ministry Notes The Food Box is an emergency food program to assist Longview families in need. Last year alone, 6,460 boxes of groceries were distributed. Monthly requests are for foods that LCM is unable to purchase through the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler. Please bring items to the Fellowship and they will be delivered to LCM. Food Box items needed for August - cereal, canned fruit, canned green vegetables Fiscal Year Ends With Budget in the Black At the Board's July 11th meeting, Jay Noble reported that we had finished the year with a budget surplus. After a few moments of celebrating and enjoying that bountiful state, the Board began looking for ways to spend it (wisely, of course). Huey Mitchell sobered the group up by adding a caveat to the surplus sum. See: Board Meeting page 3 |
