Announcements for Sunday, June 29th

Ruth:
Next Sunday's program will be "Religious Literacy."  Americans are both deeply religious and profoundly ignorant about religion.  Where do we fit?

Jo:
And Ruth will be the speaker!

Marolen:
I have been asked by the Board to monitor the items on the table in the lobby.  In our efforts to
(1) make important information available and easy to locate
(2) keep our lobby atmosphere and appearance neat and inviting
(3) make sure all materials presented are in accordance with UU principles
(4) not represent private business interests
To that end, I will be rotating items off the table to make room for new ones and removing outdated materials.  Items removed from the table will be stored at the Fellowship so the owner may collect the unused materials.

Amanda:
Chip and I pick up recycling from the Fellowship and put it out for collection by the city of Longview with ours.  So if you live where there is no recycling service, please feel free to bring it to the Fellowship.  You can leave it (bagged) on the back porch of the main building any time during the week or bring it inside with you when you come on Sunday and put it in the RECYCLING BIN.  We are currently able to recycle cardboard, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, and any paper except those used with food or for personal or household hygiene (i.e., kleenex, paper towels, napkins and plates); clear plastic water and soda bottles and milk containers; and metal cans.

Aluminum cans go to Happy for the Marshall Animal Shelter or Sky for Longview Habitat for Humanity.

Jo:  Tina was involved in a serious automobile accident Saturday in Dallas.  She had gone to pick up her niece, Avery, and they were hit by another car.  Tina's truck flipped completely over, but she and Avery were removed unharmed.  The truck, however, was totaled.

Announcements for Sunday, June 22nd

Jo:
Reminder - Next Sunday is the last Sunday of the month so we will be enjoying a delicious pot luck luncheon after Talk Back.  Rustle up those pots and pans, fire up the BBQ grill, and shop for the fixings for your favorite dish!

Ellen Herbert had back surgery two weeks ago.  I visited with her for a few hours and could see that, although she is still in a lot of pain, she is recuperating.  Frank is able to be her full-time caregiver because the class he was going to teach this summer was cancelled.  The Home Health nurse came by while I was there and was pleased to see that Ellen was able to get up and get dressed and was moving about.  I commented on how well she was sitting and standing and Ellen said that is was all thanks to a bunch of metal that was now holding her spine together!  I am sure she would enjoy a call or short visit.

Sky:
I have updated the UUFL Email & Phone List.  I have placed several copies on the table in the lobby.  Please take a look at it to see if I've got your correct current information.  Let me know if any additions or corrections need to be made.  (skysong@etex.net     903--797-4325)  If you would like a soft copy, let me know and I will email it to you.

Jay:
Jessica and I will be going to the UUA General Assembly in Florida next week.  In addition to all the wonderful workshops and activities, we will have the marvelous opportunity of visiting with Helen Ausman who will also be there!

NTAUUS:
Daniel Polk & Ann Smith
Most of the plenary sessions and worship services will be streamed online at http://uua.org/events/generalassembly/2008/112314.shtml.
Check the UUA home page for more information.

NTAUUS JUNE TRIP REPORT:

Here is my trip report for 06/15/08

  1. A nominating Committee was established to submit a slate of nominees to fill the 08/09 NTAUUS officers. Ann Smith the current secretary will chair the committee.

  1. Hoyt West, ask the board if he would be able to work within the confines of the NTAUUS social action net work to pursue raising the awareness of the need for Universal Health Care.  He referred to the fact that many social activist were UUs, and because of heir positions they brought recognition to their churches / fellowships. Hoyt is currently the head of a statewide organization working toward this goal.   He stated that he is willing to come to each society and present his views and answer questions. His bottom line is getting UUs to focus on one project and hopefully getting as many Fellowships / Churches as possible to focus on Universal Health Care.

  1. The advertisement champagne has been put in place for the Dallas papers.  I asked about the advertisement for the remote locations.  There was some resistance by Daniel Polk to doing the remote areas.  His concern was that it was difficult working with the remote papers, and he hadn’t gotten any feed back from the last effort to do this.  However it was decided that we could have three or four weeks of NTAUUS paid advertisement.  I committed that we would have someone get with Daniel and work out the details. He can be reached danieldale@worldnet.att.net  Ruth I think this would be more in your area than any one else.

  1. A vote was taken on providing financial support for UUs participation this years Gay Pride parade. Scheduled for September 21st.  They plan on using the “T” shirt we purchased last year.  I have a flyer that I will post at the Fellowship, Sunday.

  1. I brought up the topic of using AUDIO conferencing as a means of getting more of the remote people involved.  Mike stated that this had been tried before, in a much greater sense.  However my proposal to use an audio bridge was never tried and the cost would be small.  The board was in flavor of checking into the possibility of using a voice bridge.  Since no one was assigned I will follow-up and checks out the feasibility of implementation.

v     I will post this report to our WEB page, under the heading of NEWS.  Sky will also include it in the July Newsletter.

Huey

Sky:
This is a reminder.  The last Sunday of each month will be "Pot Luck Sunday."  This month, Pot Luck Sunday will be on Sunday, June 29th.  Start thinking now of what you would like to eat so you can buttonhole the appropriate people and tell them to bring your favorite dishes.  This Pot Luck Sunday will be to celebrate the passing of the torch as the 2007-2008 Board heaves a sigh of relief and the 2008-2009 Board girds their loins.

Betty:
The Christian Covenant Group will be meeting at the Fellowship on Friday, June 20th at 7:00 PM.  Everyone is welcome.

ANNOUNCEMENTS  for  SUNDAY, JUNE 1st

Jo:
The monthly Governing Board meeting will be held on its regularly scheduled date (the second Sunday of each month).  It is an open meeting.  All members and friends are invited to attend.  If there is an issue you would like the Board to take under consideration, please contact Ruth Semrau (903-- 562- 1408 or resemrau@yahoo.com) so she can put it on the agenda.  Note on your calendars:  UUFL Board Meeting Sunday, June 8th at 1:15 pm.

June is the end of our fiscal year.  The outgoing Board Members hand over their responsibilities to the incoming members.  We will celebrate this exchange with a Pot Luck Luncheon on Sunday, June 29th following Talk Back.

It has been brought to my attention that the thermostat is being adjusted by several different people.  It is our goal to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the time people are here on Sunday.  Please DO NOT CHANGE THE SETTINGS because this will not allow the system to maintain an even temperature.

Ruth:
Next Sunday's program will feature one of our favorite exercises.  It is our Summer Reading Club!
Enthusiastic readers are invited to participate by bringing a book to recommend to the congregation. Since we seem to be such avid readers, you can recommend as many books as you want, but you must abide by the "Two minute Limit."

Tina:
Holly need people to help with bringing snacks, making coffee, and cleaning up afterwards.  If you enjoy having coffee and snacks on Sundays when you attend, please consider helping make it happen.  You can choose a Sunday that is convenient for you and put your name on the sign-up sheet in the lobby.  If you have questions, contact Holly (l_ravenweed@yahoo.com or 903-- 553- 0288).

**Special Announcement*
Megan Dalby-Jones will be coming to our Fellowship to speak once a month on the second Sunday of each month from July through December.

U U F L  Announcements for Sunday, May 25th

Jo:
We have received a very nice thank-you note from Helen Ausman, one of our founding members, who recently moved to Florida.  You can read it in the newsletter (hard copy or on line) or see the original on the bulletin board.

Volunteers Needed!  There are lots of different things that need to be done to keep our Fellowship clean, comfortable, helpful, viable, and functioning.  Some jobs require a small amount of time on a regular basis, some are a one-time thing, some ask for a monthly or quarterly commitment, and some are heavy duty.  We could, of course, hire people to do everything that needs to be done (assuming we had the money to pay them) but we would lose important opportunities to weave the bonds of friendship that come from working together for a common goal.  Please be thinking about how you would be able to be part of the tapestry of our Fellowship.

The Board has agreed that we should have regular Pot Luck Sundays in order to foster and build community within our Fellowship.  After discussion, it was decided to designate the last Sunday of each month as Pot Luck Sunday.  As it turns out, this will provide a perfect opportunity to celebrate the "changing of the guard" as the out-going Governing Board hands over the reins of leadership to the in-coming Board.

Sky:
The June newsletter is now available.  You can pick up a copy in the lobby or go to our website (uulongview.com) and read it on line.

Holly:
The Earth-Centered Spirituality Group will be meeting the second Sunday in June (June 8th) at 6:30 pm at the UUFL.  We will be holding a Summer Solstice ceremony.  Anyone interested is invited to attend.

Ruth:
Next Sunday's program will feature Megan Dalby-Jones as our speaker.  Here is the blurb she sent about her talk:
"How Can I Keep From Singing"
This June, many Unitarian Universalist Congregations will participate in parades and celebrations commemorating the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion.  Why?  What is the religious motivation behind advocating for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered persons?
